Admission Information

Admission of a student to the graduate program in Plant Breeding, Genetics & Genomics depends on:

  1. Meeting the Admission Criteria
  2. The availability of a faculty member able to serve as major professor
  3. The availability of assistantship funds

All admissions are based on a favorable evaluation by the Institute's Coordinating Committee and acceptance by the Graduate School of the University of Georgia.

Admission Criteria

Admission to the graduate program in Plant Breeding, Genetics & Genomics is highly competitive. Students will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but generally should have a GRE score (Verbal+Quantitative) of at least 1000 and a GPA of at least 3.0 for a Master's degree and 3.5 for the PhD degree. Foreign applicants have to take the TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language); minimum scores for this test are 80 for the internet-based test (with minimum of 20 on the speaking and 20 on the writing portion), 213 for the computer-based test and 530 for the paper-based test.

  • Application and three letters of recommendation submitted on-line.
    [Applicants who wish to be considered as legal Georgia residents for tuition purposes must submit the Application for Georgia Residence Status, found on page 4 of this application. This form is only visible for current Georgia residents who request to apply for residency on page 2.]
  • Application Fee of $50.00 (paid online). The application processing fee is non-refundable and is collected to cover the cost of processing the admissions application. A reduced application fee of $25.00 is available to former UGA graduate students who are applying for new admission or readmission to enroll within four semesters of their last semester of UGA graduate enrollment.
  • Two official transcripts (official academic records and certified English translations, if applicable, for international applicants) from each institution of higher education attended. For U.S. institutions, use the Transcript Request Form.
  • GRE Standardized test scores officially sent from the testing agency (ETS School Code: 5813).
  • International applicants must also submit either TOEFL scores officially sent from the testing agency (ETS School Code: 5813) OR the IELTS Scores officially sent form the IELTS Testing Center. In addition, a Certificate of Finances (COF) form which documents financial support must be submitted. NOTE: In order to be considered for a departmental teaching assistantship, international applicants must obtain a score of 26 on the speaking portion of the IBT TOEFL.
